Working to promote sustainable farming practices
We need to be helping farmers move their practice towards more sustainable methods such as organic farming, agroforestry and providing cruelty-free produce to local food markets. If farming follows these practices we will also be encouraging wildlife corridors and an increase in biodiversity.
Why the contribution is important
world wide food shortages are going to be increasingly more common and how we farm will either strengthen or weaken our ability to produce food for our local communities. Growing and purchasing locally has economic benefit for the region and makes us more sustainable in changing times. However, we need the community to be supporting farmers in making this transition by sharing best practice, helping financially during transition years and creating incentives to change. Could B&NES impose a graded ocal tax on foodstuff that comes from outside circles of distance from the authority?
